The East African coast has a series of continental
islands; they are actually part of the continent. When the intermediate
land sank, and the area was filled with water, the smaller isolated land
areas became islands. Zanzibar is one of these islands.
The old section of Zanzibar Town is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Much of the charm it had in the days when it was a
flourishing seaport is evident; there is a winding labyrinth of narrow
streets – only passageways in some places – and architecture that is
a blend of Portuguese, East Indian, Persian and Omani Arab influence.
You stay in a premier hotel owned by the Aga Khan in "Stone
Town" and visit plantations famous for groves of coconuts,
cinnamon, cloves, cocoa, and pepper. Swim and snorkel off lovely,
unspoiled beaches and have a picnic of fresh grilled fish.
